Breakfast Sausage
Here is what I do for breakfast sausage.
two pounds ground pork
one tablespoon salt
one tablespoon pepper
one tablespoon sage
Mix it up, and store it in those ziplock bags that let you evacuate most of the air. That’s it.
I get my spices from Penzeys. Unfortunately, I’ve never found ground pork (or any kind of pork) at the two closest farmers markets, so I get it from the meat...

Bread
I have been using this recipe for bread:
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/classic-100-whole-wheat-bread-recipe
In case King Arthur Flour stops hosting the page, here are the ingredients:
8 to 10 ounces lukewarm water*
1 3/4 ounces vegetable oil
3 ounces honey, molasses, or maple syrup
14 ounces King Arthur Premium 100% Whole Wheat Flour
2 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast, or 1...

No more sam.falkner@sun.com
As of today, I can no longer send email from sam.falkner@sun.com. I was curious about the last email I ever sent from that address, so I checked. It was a reply, apologizing about not having much in the way of automated test suites for NFSv4 ACLs.

As far as I can tell, there is no mention of “Heckler’s Joke Shop” on the internet. I hope I’m wrong, but just in case, I’m mentioning it here.
If memory serves, Heckler’s Joke Shop was near 39th and MacArthur in Bethany, Oklahoma. In the 70’s, it was the place to go if you wanted a ring that squirts water or plastic vomit.

Here is how I cook ribs in the Bradley Smoker:
Set the smoker for high heat; aim for 200-225
Remove membrane from the back side
Cover both sides with Penzey’s BBQ 3000
Put ribs in the smoker, and turn on the smoke generator.
Maintain the smoke generator for 1 1/2 hours, checking temperature occasionally
Mix one part oil and one part apple juice in a spray bottle
Spray ribs every...

Last night, my kids had the choice of whether to spend the afternoon playing with friends, or going to a movie with me. They picked going with me, hands down. I want to remember that.

Yesterday, at Grant’s basketball game, someone sheepishly asked me who was playing in the Superbowl. Of course I didn’t know, but never fear, I have an iPhone! Thrashing around between Google, Wikipedia, and superbowl.com, I couldn’t find anything (although the failure with superbowl.com may have been because of the lack of a flash player for the iPhone). On the way out, we...

I take it back. He’s been doing it all morning, and now it’s starting to get on my nerves.
Someone I don’t know just rode a bike past my office. I have an interior office on the third floor, with carpet and all that. I love working close to the holidays!

I’m in the San Jose airport, waiting to board a plane back home, using the free wi-fi. A bishop in full mitre and robes just walked past me. I don’t know whether or not it was a Halloween costume.

Solaris and OpenSolaris VPS ISPs
Here is a list of ISPs that will give you root password on your own Solaris (or OpenSolaris) virtual box. Could be xVM (Xen), could be zones; either way. In no particular order:
Stability Hosting
Avantic
Beacon VPS
Entic
Gangus
Joyent
Amazon EC2

Last night we bought a piano, and today (while I’m at work) it was delivered. It’s a Vogel, which is made by Schimmel; a grand, 177 cm long. Of all the pianos that I played while piano shopping, this was my clear favorite.

I’ve been into clocks with my last two posts. I wish I knew where to get high quality audio of the Westminster Quarters for a small project I would like to do.

My daughter is now a professional writer. The Boulder Valley School District awarded her a Readers’ Choice award for her contribution to their literary magazine, and the award came with a savings bond. :-)
The combination of my rental car (a GM SUV) and the parking garage at the San Jose Hilton are making me a sad panda.
The Scientology convention next door is inspiring me to take the Solaris NFS server in breathtakingly new directions.

I like the iPod shuffle, and understand its interface. But wouldn’t it be great if, on command, it could speak the name of the song being played?
On my way to the Denver airport yesterday, I saw that they had built a blue sculpture of a horse beside the road. It was terrifying.

When I was in high school, our concert band played Symphony in B-flat for Band by Paul Hindemith. It’s been rattling around in my brain ever since. Last week, I got it on CD. Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I...

As so often happens, I got sick while traveling. This time, mega-sore throat. But today I’m pleased as punch: it’s strep! Finally, I can do something that doesn’t involve waiting six weeks.
Yesterday, my family reached an important milestone. We now have a laptop (Apple) and an iPod for each person.

The DTrace provider for NFS is getting mighty close to being finished…
Last night, our family survived the Multiple Piano Festival, in Longmont. Grant, Julie, and I all participated, while Ardith watched from the audience. It was really fun!
